Harvesting coconuts,
reimagined.

CocoDrone is an open source project building autonomous drones to safely and efficiently harvest coconuts — eliminating the dangerous practice of manual tree climbing.

Why CocoDrone?

Every year, thousands of workers are injured or killed climbing coconut palms. We believe technology can solve this.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Safety First

Coconut harvesting is one of the most dangerous agricultural jobs in the world. CocoDrone removes the need for humans to climb 20+ meter trees.

โ™ป๏ธ

Sustainable

Designed for small-scale farmers and cooperatives. Low-cost, repairable hardware using widely available components. No vendor lock-in, ever.

Fully Open Source

Hardware designs, firmware, flight software, and mechanical plans — everything is published under AGPL-3.0 on GitHub. Fork it, improve it, share it.

Project Areas

CocoDrone is a multidisciplinary effort. Here's what we're building.

1

Drone Platform

A rugged multirotor drone frame optimized for tropical environments — rain-resistant, high payload capacity, and easy to repair with common tools and 3D-printed parts.

CAD Design 3D Printing Aerodynamics
2

Harvesting Mechanism

A lightweight end-effector that can grip, cut, and safely lower coconuts to the ground. Current prototypes use a rotary blade with a catch basket.

Mechanical Engineering Robotics Prototyping
3

Computer Vision

AI-powered detection of ripe coconuts, trunk mapping, and obstacle avoidance. Built on open ML frameworks with training data contributed by the community.

Machine Learning OpenCV Dataset
4

Flight Controller & Autonomy

Autonomous mission planning, GPS waypoint navigation, and precision hovering near tree canopies. Built on ArduPilot/PX4 with custom extensions.

ArduPilot ROS Embedded
5

Ground Station & App

A simple mobile app for farmers to plan harvesting runs, monitor progress, and track yield. No cloud dependency — works offline.
